  17. PATROL COMMUNIQUE 4024/8:  Friendly robot freighter downed on planetoid
  18. Beta-7 in your quadrant.
  19.  
  20. CARGO:  Valuable trimetalisium energy crystals.  Enemy star cruiser with
  21. fighter drones enroute to confiscate these highly valuable blue energy
  22. crystals.
  23.  
  24. MISSION:  Recover as many crystals as possible.  Destroy all enemy fighter
  25. drones you encounter.  Intelligence reports that enemy is combat testing new
  26. models of these drones and will periodically replace them during melee.
  27.  
  28. MISSION STATUS:  Critical.  Expect extreme danger when penetrating orange
  29. atmosphere of Beta-7 planetoid.  The energy crystals have ionized the gases
  30. to such an extent that your horizontal drives will be useless: you may not be
  31. able to move left or right at low altitudes.  No further communication
  32. authorized.  Good Hunting.

  35.                       G E T T I N G    S T A R T E D

  37. 1.  Plug in Joystick or Ball Controller
  38.  
  39. 2.  Turn power OFF, insert game cartridge.
  40.  
  41. 3.  Turn power ON.
  42.  
  43. 4.  DIFFICULTY SWITCHES are not used with STAR FOX since the enemy
  44. automatically becomes more aggressive as your score increases.
  45.  
  46. 5.  JOYSTICK CONTROLLERS move your space ship in any direction.  When you
  47. enter the orange atmosphere your landing gear will automatically deploy.  You
  48. will not be able to move left or right while in the planet's atmosphere.  The
  49. red button on the joystick fires your laser cannon.
  50.  
  51. 6.  BALL CONTROLLERS work very well with STAR FOX.  Higher scores should be
  52. possible.

  54. 7.  GAME SELECT SWITCH will allow you to choose the
  55.

  58. difficulty level and whether one or two players will be playing.

  61.   Man + Happy Face + Blank      Practice mode - One player only, no scoring

  77. 8.  BEGIN PLAY by pressing the game reset button or by pressing the red button
  78. on your controller.  After each loss of a life, a controller symbol will
  79. appear at the top of the screen.  Pressing the red button on your controller
  80. will restart the game.

  82. Once you have pressed the read button, you are free to being searching for
  83. crystals.  They are always located just off the screen to the left or right.
  84. Flying in one direction then turning around and flying in the other direction
  85. is the best way to find crystals.
  86.  
  87. 9.  SCORING is done by destroying enemy fighters and recovering blue
  88. trimetalisium crystals.  To destroy a fighter drone you may shoot it with your
  89. LASER or ram it.  Be careful in the second level of difficulty;  your ship is
  90. destroyed if you ram the enemy.

  92. SCORES:
  93.         Ram enemy               10 points
  94.         Shoot enemy            100 points
  95.         Recover crystal        200 points

  99. 10.  LIVES remaining in addition to your current life are displayed at the top
  100. of the screen.  You have a total of four lives at the beginning of each game.

  102. 11.  DIFFICULTY is determined automatically.  As your score increases the
  103. enemy becomes faster.  Your opponent is replaced automatically every 2000
  104. points or so, depending upon the tactics programmed into the enemy.  All but
  105. the most difficult enemy drones are available in the practice mode as well.
  106. In this mode, pressing RESET switch will return you to the easiest enemy.
  107. Each successive fighter drone is more difficult to shoot than the last.  Only
  108. the best players will get a chance to see some of the most aggressive units.

  112. Your search for crystals will be greatly reduced by flying rapidly to the
  113. right or to the left.  If you do not come across a crystal within a few
  114. seconds reverse direction.  This will generally being a crystal into view
  115. almost immediately.
  116.  
  117. You are most vulnerable when within Beta-7's atmosphere while recovering the
  118. trimetalisium crystals.  Since trimetalisium possesses an extraordinary
  119. amount of energy, they float above the surface of Beta-7.  To reduce the time
  120. you must remain within the atmosphere wait until the crystal is near the top
  121. of the gaseous layer.  It is also helpful to dive into the atmosphere at an
  122. angle instead of dropping stright down.  Since your landing gear will deploy
  123. automatically as soon as your ship's sensors detect Beta-7's atmosphere gases
  124. you will decelerate very rapidly.  Pick-up the crystal and ascend to thinner
  125. air.

  131. STAR FOX by Mythicon has a high level of computer intelligence built in.  The
  132. enemy is very smart and always knows where you are.  It has an automatic
  133. tracking system which tells at what altitude you are flying, what airspeed
  134. your are maintaining and your rate of acceleration and deceleration.
  135.  
  136. Because of the extraordinary sensing devices aboard, a fighter drone is
  137. capable of detecting your exery motion, except when bombing.  It will attempt
  138. to evade your LASER cannon and reestablish an attack position behind your
  139. ship.  Its sensors will also detect your entry into Beta-7's atmosphere.
  140. While you are recovering the trimetalisium crystals it will assume a bombing
  141. mode since it is not constructed to survive the ionized gases of the
  142. atmosphere.  In this mode it will detect your location, hover above you, and
  143. release tactical bombs.  When you rise out of the atmospheric level, it re-
  144. assumes its attack mode and the firing of its missles.
